The winners of the 2021 Photographic Ship Model Competition were announced at the 2021 Annual Member's meeting on November 20, 2021.  Winners will be featured in the Winter 66.4 issue of the Nautical Research Journal.

This was the Guild’s fourth Photographic Ship Model Competition. The panel of eleven judges reviewed and evaluated about 500 photographs of 48 models to determine the medal winners and models that deserved award ribbons.

In addition, the judges provided every entrant with an assessment of each model’s best qualities and suggestions for improvement, which we hope can help advance the art and craft of ship modeling.

The Guild thanks the organizers and judges for their efforts and, above all, the entrants themselves for their artistry and dedication expressed in all their beautiful models.

Using the Table Saw Safely, presented by Kurt Van Dahm

The safe use of smaller table saws, like the Byrnes saw, will be the subject of the presentation.  Though smaller than full-sized table saws, model-sized saws can still take a finger off or severely injure the modeler if they are used in an unsafe manner.   

Kurt will show how to perform rip cuts, cross cuts, lap joints, miters and other common operations in a safe and efficient manner.  Many modelers say they are totally intimidated by the dangers of the table saw and that they are hesitant to use the saw they purchased.  After this program, these modelers should be less hesitant to use their saw.   And those modelers who routinely use their saws will appreciate the tips on proper saw set-up.   

At a minimum this presentation will provide a helpful review of safety tips and might even prevent an injury due to complacency.

The Nautical Research Guild is proud to offer the reprinting of The Seaman’s Speculum or Compleat School-Master by John Davis and edited by Merritt A. Edson, Jr.   This reprint is offered as a digital publication.

The Guild published a limited edition of this 1711 treatise on late 17th and early 18th century rigging of British naval and merchant ships in 1985. The 1985 reprint was taken from a microfilm made by the Smithsonian Institute of the only known surviving copy. The book has since disappeared. Much of the information is presented in tabular format. 

Also included are The Rules of Gunnery, which details the guns of that era, their requirements for powder and shot and the techniques of loading and firing. As part of The Rules, The Duty of the Clerk, Pilot, Mate, Surgeon and Seamen of a Ship, according to Custom lists the duties of the various crew members, both on board and at the end of the voyage.

To illustrate the Ten Steps, the presentation concludes with do’s and don’ts using her first kit model, Mantua’s Peregrine Galley, as a teaching aid.
